Calories burned = Fat burned = WEIGHT LOSS

Let’s solve the debate on low intensity vs. high intensity workouts. There are many conflicting statement about how long and how hard you need to exercise in order to lose weight.

A high intensity workout, which is defined as exercises which push your heart rate up to 75% of its maximum or more, is infinitely better. High intensity workouts have been proven to increase metabolism and burn more calories. In fact, high intensity burns 9 times more fat per each calorie burn during exercise. The reality is that the activity that expends the greatest amount of total calories will lead to the most amount of fat burned! Best of all, the benefits become evident in a matter of weeks!
American College of Sports Medicine Position Stand - The recommended quantity and quality of exercise for developing and maintaining cardio respiratory and muscular fitness, and flexibility in healthy adults, Med. Science. Sports Exercise., Vol. 30, No. 6, pp. 975-991, 1998:

"The combination of frequency, intensity, and duration of chronic exercise has been found to be effective for producing a training effect. The interaction of these factors provide the overload stimulus. In general, the lower the stimulus the lower the training effect, and the greater the stimulus the greater the effect. As a result of specificity of training and the need for maintaining muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility of the major muscle groups, a well-rounded training program including aerobic and resistance training, and flexibility exercises is recommended. Although age in itself is not a limiting factor to exercise training, a more gradual approach in applying the prescription at older ages seems prudent. . ."

The reality is that low intensity exercise burns fewer calories. To achieve the same benefits of a high intensity workout, you are going to have to exercise longer. So, if you are going easy with your exercise, your are going to have to exercise longer!

Have a "intense and exciting" day!

Should schools send home a report card about children's bodyweight?

n Medway Massachusetts the public school system is insisting the students are weighed and that their body mass index be calculated so that the school can determine if the child is obese or not.

They are early adopters of this trend and it may be coming to your school district soon.

The results are sent home with the student just like a report card would except it is a report card on the child’s fitness level.

Some parents are already fighting this claiming that the public school system and the state government has overstepped their boundaries and is showing no respect for the parents and pediatrician.

The potential risk with this is that the child will feel embarrassed or judged. Will they wonder if they are being watched every time they eat lunch, which can easily lead to an eating disorder after that.

The school system is probably thinking that someone has to take charge, but when are they going to actually teach the child how to eat, exercise and live a healthier life?

Is it going to be during that 1 hour period where they cut out gym class from most schools or is it going to be during math class when they teach them how to figure out their BMI?

Should the school system be allowed to require body weight measurements and have a fitness report card sent home to the parents or should they butt out and mind their own business?

Please, let us know what you think.

Stretch is important!

Stretching is so often something people neglect to do at the end of a training session because they are too tired to do anything else. Or when they do, they just rush through each stretch and so don't get the full benefit of each one.

We stretch to improve our flexibility. Flexibility is the range of motion that is available to a joint or joints. Flexibility is important because:

· It improves muscle balance around a joint, thus improving posture
· It reduces the chance of injury when playing a sport or in every day activities
· It increases the blood and nutrient supply to muscles and cartilage, thereby also reducing muscle soreness after training.

It is also important to stretch the days you don't work out to mantain and increase flexibility. The more frequent you stretch the easier it gets!

Have a kicking day!

Take time out, and instead of saying no to exercise say no to something else! Read the article and find out “why”!

While the majority of fitness research efforts focus on the physical and health benefits of exercise, there is a growing body of work demonstrating that exercise promotes wellness and mental health. Researchers at Duke University studied people suffering from depression for 4 months and found that 60% of the participants who exercised for 30 minutes three times a week overcame their depression without using antidepressant medication. This is the same percentage rate as for those who only used medication in their treatment for depression.

You don't have to be suffering from a clinical or diagnosed Mental Illness to get substantial mental health benefits from exercise and fitness. One study found that short workouts of 8 minutes in length could help lower sadness, tension and anger along with improving resistance to disease in healthy people. Many people exercise to boost confidence along with reducing anxiety and stress, all of which contribute to psychological health and well-being. So, exercise can be viewed as a preventative or wellness activity that may actually help prevent physical and emotional conditions. By the way, even short bursts of activity help individuals feel better, which means that you don't have to spend hours at the gym to gain real mental health benefits.

Following research results, one reason, that specialists found, for the feelings of well-being that are generated during and after exercise: the body's natural release of endorphins. These chemicals released by the brain are the body's natural painkillers and can lead to an increase in feelings of happiness. "Exercise leads to an increase in energy and to better sleeping patterns, which may also explain why it is so helpful to people with depression. Low energy and poor sleep are common symptoms of depression."
Now YOU know why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are YOU ready for a change? If you are, make a comment about the article and I will set you up with a one week personal challenge to start changing your “bad habits”.

See ya,

The 5 steps that will change your life ! I know you have been waiting for it!! Take it, it's yours!!

"Some men see things as they are, and say, 'Why'? I dream of things that never were, and say, 'Why not'?
-George Bernard Shaw

Guys, that is what you need to ask yourself everyday: Why not getting in the shape that I always wanted? Why not getting healthier? Why not improve on my self confidence? Why not invest my time on myself?

Here is the deal, and it is the truth. If you don't make the first move and start exercising and eating right, things will never change for you! So, here it is a quick 5 steps exercise you will do and that should start changing some of your habits:

You will do this for the first week of your habit changing experience:

Step 1: choose your favorite book and go to bed at 9am. By the latest 10 you should be at sleep (no TV)

Step 2: wake up at 6 am and go for a 45 minutes walk/run around your neighborhood or park. Fell the early morning energy. That will wake up your muscles

Step 3: For this week, lay off the sugar, pasta and drinks of any type (except water). Have 5 meal during the day with 2 to 3 hour break in between.

Step 4: On the last day of the week (Sunday), officially celebrate the last day of your "Old You" and say good by to your old habits.

Step 5: Register on our 30 DAY CAGE FITNESS CHALLENGE and celebrate the "New You" and get with the program. What is the worse that could happen? Your life becoming extraordinary!!!!!!!!!! I would settle for that!!!

To make even more fun, get 4 of your buddies and do it together. You will be proud of yourself when you see the changes on every one's life!!

Now, just to pump you up even more, when you come to the school ready for you life changing make sure to mention that you followed the 5 steps that i MENTIONED ABOVE and you will earn an extra welcome gift to honor your dedication to change!!

LET'S KICK YOUR LIFE CHANGING TOGETHER!!!

See you soon

Fall Preventing Effects of the Korean Martial Art, TaeKwon-Do, in Senior Citizens
. Amazing!!

Abstract
Falls are a leading cause of death in the elderly. Associated with aging is a loss of muscular strength, flexibility, and coordination. Regular exercise is widely believed to be of benefit for the elderly. To this end, various exercise regimes have been employed to battle the associated problems of aging. The present study was designed to examine the appropriateness and effects of a Korean marital art known as Tae Kwon-Do (TKD), a "hard" martial art, on an elderly population. Results: increases in balance, strength, and flexibility were all observed. Conclusion: TKD proved effective at increasing several parameters correlated with fall prevention. The elderly are capable of participating in a hard marital art and they have an interest in it as a viable alternative to other forms of exercise. The present study suggests that TKD as a form of exercise for an elderly population is both viable and potentially popular and warrants further study.

Amazing!!

Movement melts away stress!! Did you know that?

As much as it may stress you out just to think about exercising, once you actually start working out, you'll experience less stress in every part of your life.

"Exercise produces a relaxation response that serves as a positive distraction," says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. He says it also helps elevate your mood and keep depression at bay.

You're not the only person who will benefit from more happiness and less stress in your life. When you're less stressed, you're less irritable, and that could improve relationships with your partner, kids, and co-workers.

Keep up with your exercises!! Only awesome things will come out of it!!

Have a stressless day!!!!

May is Mother's Day Month!

Hi everyone! Instructor Adam writing, and I want to remind you all that this month is Mother's Day month at Park's! All mom's (and dad's) are invited to class for free this month.

I remember when I was 14 when my mother took class for the first time. I still can see the image of her punching and kicking, and sweating too, with the whole class. What a kick I got out of watching her take the class that I had done so many times! She used to tell me, "Adam, I know you work hard in TaeKwonDo class, but are you sure you are getting a good work out?" I used to tell her, "Mom, OF COURSE!" I'm not sure if she really believed me. I was kind of a chubby kid, I'm still not the skinniest straw in the bunch, and it took me a while to shed the weight. I think it got her thinking that I wasn't working hard, or class wasn't hard enough. Boy was she surprised when she finished her first class... I think from then on she definitely had more respect for what I was doing every day.

I cannot think of someone who has supported my Martial Arts experience for longer than she has, but I'm not sure if she would have seen it my way this whole time if she had never tried it for herself!

That is why I encourage ALL mom's and dad's to get into class and try it, at least once! It will not only be a ton of fun, but you will have a new view of what your child is doing! I hope to see you all there!
